@dMOTUc – By speed I mean how responsive the phone is. You wouldn’t believe the difference between the AT&T stock ROM and Dutty’s latest ROM. It’s like moving from a 286 to a Core2Duo. The screen redraws so much faster and apps open and close so quickly that’d you’ll feel the phone is more like a laptop than a calculator. By the way, if you are having dropped call problems, I would try a different Radio ROM. The good news is you can flash new radios all day without losing any settings on the phone. Just avoid that one evil radio that locks you down and you should be fine. Besides, different radios not only affect call quality but battery life. Most of us run through every radio for the WM version we’re on just to see which works best for our area.

Thanks Michael,

i was curious as to what ROM and Radio you’re using. I am such a NOOB that after 4 hours and going back and forth, I am totally confused. I ended up loading ROM 3.53.502.0 WWE with a 1.64.08.21 radio — developer claims that it is the latest ATT WM6.1 ROM. So far so good, but was curious what I am giving up by not going with a Dutty ROM (for example). What do you mean by speed? And my biggest complaint is constantly dropping calls (even when I’ve got all the bars!!). Appreciate your very helpful comments!

@dMOTUc – Are you talking about WM6.1 ROMs? If that’s what you mean, then there’s no need to wait. Most of the ROMs being cooked (like dutty’s) are WM6.1. They’ve got their hands on the new AT&T version as well. From what I’ve read, it’s still better to grab a cooked ROM that has been toyed with for speed. Just avoid the one radio ROM that locks the device. I believe it’s the 17.10 but you can check the XDA forums to confirm that.

Never underestimate the power of people to get their grubby hands on something before they’re supposed to…

Great article. Any thoughts on whether it is worth waiting for the new HTC updated ROM before doing this? Or are the performance benefits between the standard ATT Rom and say Dutty’s make it a no brainer to go with Dutty’s — realizing of course, no one has played with the new HTC rom

@Bill – My best suggestion is to hit up the Kaiser forum over at xda-developers. The guys there are far more intimate with the finer nuances of the device than I am and they’re always up for a challenge and glad to help out.

I was given a new Tilt with AT&T and I am still in contract with T-Mobile. So I tried to unlock it and I messed up the phone. The flash screen says “Not for resale” when I flashed the screen expecting something NOT AT&T. I just want to get the thing unlocked. Anyone care to assist me personally? My phone number is Bill Zimmermann 619-260-0677. I can ship the phone to you after we talk. I will have to verify your employer so I don’t get ripped off. certainly you understand this. If we can do it over the phone that’s cool too.
