AT&T Tilt

Since it seems that my most popular posts are those about the AT&T Tilt (aka HTC TyTN II or HTC Kaiser), I thought it best to consolidate the posts on a static page. Before you begin, please take note of a couple of things:

  • Before you do anything, read my posts and the sticky thread in the Kaiser ROM Development forum. This includes the links provided in that sticky thread. Why? See the next point.
  • ROM flashing is not something to take lightly. You can quite easily turn your phone into a paperweight. Understand that if you change your ROM, you are voiding the warranty. While it is often possible to return the phone to its original state for RMA purposes, do not expect that this will be possible 100% of the time.
  • The amount of reading will take time. It may be as little as 6 or 7 hours but will likely take a couple of days. Trust me, better to take the time up front learning than to sit back without a phone because you skipped a step and bricked your expensive device.
  • I cannot stress enough that you need to take the time to read completely through the threads. This means the sticky and the thread for the ROM you decide to install. Yes, it is a lot of reading. Yes, many of the ROM threads are in excess of 100 pages of posts. And yes, you will be mercilessly flamed if you ask a question that has been repeatedly addressed.
  • As if I have not stressed this enough, please go over Forum Etiquette even if you areĀ familiar with the proper way to work with such a community. Yes, this includes things like reading the sticky thread. Why do I have that linked so much? Because more than half of the posts could be eliminated if people read the sticky thread first. It is there for a reason. Use it.
  • Did I mention that the sticky thread is useful?

Common terminology can be found here. You will need to know what a ROM is and the difference between the ROM and the Radio ROM. You will also want to know a little about HardSPL if you plan on changing your ROM. Also take note that there is a Radio out there that will lock your phone so you cannot change to other Radios. DO NOT INSTALL IT. All of this information is available at xda-developers.

Now, here are a few notes about making changes to the Tilt:

  • My first AT&T Software post is actually pretty dated. There are a few useful tidbits in there but for the most part this is recreational reading at this point.
  • My AT&T Software - Revisited post is much more useful. The directions given for flashing a ROM are very basic but important. This by no means gives you enough to fully understand what you need to do and therefore you should still read the sticky thread. However, it does touch the high points and works well for an overview.
  • After testing, I would have to say that probably the most robust ROMs are the series cooked by duttythroy. There is an entire Wiki section dedicated to details and FAQs on his ROM series.
  • There are a lot of applications available for the Windows Mobile Professional platform. Many of these can be found in the Kaiser Software forum. These applications do not require you to flash a custom ROM. They can simply be installed like any other program. Feel free to experiment until you find the combination that works for you.

I will further develop this page as time goes on, but remember to do your reading and take notes on things before you take the plunge. Be sure to research your questions before posting them because they may already be answered. And finally, Read The Sticky.
