PS, Apple will also work with you on the price point, especially for the Mac Pro customers. They don’t budge much on their consumer models, but the Mac Pro they WILL work with you.

I own a Mac Pro 2,1 (2x 3GHz) and am extremely pleased. I have used Precision machines before, and they do not seem to have the same performance. The only thing I can think of is the OS, OS X 10.6.x is rock-solid, and on equivalent hardware, faster than Win 7 x64. The downside is that with my model, I have the EFI32 not the EFI64. Which means that I can not boot a ntive 64-bit Snow Leopard kernel, however, I have no difficulty running 64-bit apps. When 32GB RAM becomes a limiting factor, I will either look at upgrading my MacPro to 64GB (unsupported by Apple of course) or looking into the 12-core MacPro which handles 64GB nicely and SHOULD handle ever more. HP’s, I find to be overpriced for what you get, no arguments there. Very informative writeup, and non-biased which OI also like.

The problem with that is there is no way to quantify the amount of discount. It really depends on the deals available, the rep you get, quantity ordered, and many other factors. I felt the best way to do a comparison would be to work strictly off list prices from their sites. I do think, though, now that you have mentioned it that I should have put a “YMMV” disclaimer for discounts/sales/etc. It’s also time I do a new set of comparisons.

Um you guys are leaving out the important part on the price/purchase system. On the dell you can call a rep and have the price slashed by a much bigger factor. The dell will ALWAYS ALWAYS be cheaper. Systemshootouts.org was always off, this comparison is much more fair. Just missing the part where anyone buying a precision or server calls a rep and gets a deal.

We often neglect the excise tax revenues generated by analogs. I think that I read that the feds have collected over 77 billion dollars the last 10 years and that doesn't include state excise and sale tax revenues. I'm more inclined to believe that our government will let us kill ourselves with analogs rather than give up the tax money.

How are the beds made? Elliotts Designs iron beds start off as heavy gauge steel tube and rod. They then cut and bend all of the material at the time an order is placed. Once the materials are cut it is then taken to the foundry and their special blend of Aluminum is used for the castings. Once the bed is poured, it is then inspected. The bed is then hand filed and once again inspected. After filing, the bed is then sent through the roto-blast machine where the surface of the bed is preped for painting. The bed is then sent through the paint line where it is inspected before it is painted. Once painted and cooled, the bed is inspected once more before heading to packing if it is a one step finish. If it is a premium finish the bed is then inspected and sent to Duratique where the bed is hand painted, inspected, cured and then sent to the packaging department. The bed is inspected one final time and foamed and boxed. Why does Elliott s Designs inspect the bed so much? They want to be sure you receive the highest quality bed available.

Dave, considering the theme of your comments on my posts, I am going to guess you've had some bad experiences. I'm also going to go out on a limb and say you've decided that perpetuating the stereotype of men only after one thing is the only way to find what you believe is happiness. I've touched real joy and fulfillment. I hope to find myself there again. I cannot make you see my point of view, but I know there is better out there.

I've known many great women that are not at all how you described. I know the men they eventually settled down with. I can assure you that they aren't all as cold as you think. But this is, of course, all a matter of perspective. I know how you can feel the way you do because I've been there. Then I saw something different. I hope that you also get a chance to see things the way I do now.

Women are not interested in “nice guys”. They want good-looking, rich men who will support and pamper them, and that is ALL they want. Women dont really care what is on your mind, and they accuse us of thinking about only “one thing” to justify their failure to look beneath the surface. Women dont care what is in your heart, just what is in your wallet. (The money, not the condom.) They are all superficial, shallow, gold-digging harpies, and you are probably better of without them. So, enjoy yourself. See how many one-night-stands you can have before senility and impotence set in. After all, if you cant earn thier loyalty, why do they deserve yours?

Actually, I believe it is the other way around. Assumptions like yours are the problem. I do not believe that a “successful” relationship is one where it is based on a desire for wealth, power, or material possessions. Now, don't get me wrong. I think you should have a good job and be able to pay your bills with at least some money left over for enjoyment…but that in itself should not be a driving goal nor should it be the basis of a relationship if it is to be truly fulfilling.

Besides, who says I can't be a “free thinker” and still be successful in terms of occupation and finance? And for the record, my appearance gets more than a few compliments…but then good hygiene isn't something to skimp on.

The point I was making is that you have to set aside all of the assumptions that you so kindly stated in your post. Those very things undermine the foundations of a deep, strong, fulfilling relationship. They mute the voice that is the core of yourself. The first step is to learn to listen all over again.

I think that you are operating under a faulty assumption. You seem to think that people with open minds who are always trying to improve themselves stand a better chance of having successful relationships. In my experiance, women are not interested in “nice guys”. They are attracted to good looks and money, AND THAT IS ALL!!! They are not interested in what is in your heart. They dont care what kind of deep thoughts you have. How you look and how much money you have are their primary concerns. So stop wasting your time being a “free thinker”, get a good job that pays well, and do whatever you can to improve your appearence. The only “nice guys” in successful relationships are the ones with lots of money and looks.
